HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEM

The issues

The health information system (HIS) is composed of people, tools and methods that interact at different stages of the health information production process. These stages are: the collection of individual or primary data and the aggregation, storing, sharing and analysis of data.

The role of Solthis is to reinforce the HIS of national health programmes in order to improve patient monitoring, as well as health programme planning and management.

Our priorities

  • Improve the quality and availability of the health data produced
  • Strengthen HIS responsiveness in order to generate recent data
  • Produce indicators to evaluate the efficiency and impact of public health policies

Our objectives

To meet the HIS needs of each country, Solthis is working to improve the health information production process at several levels:

  • Develop tools and methods for data collection and use, tailored to user needs
  • Produce accurate and complete data to improve patient monitoring and calculate aggregate indicators
  • Strengthen the capacity of HIS professionals in data collection, management and analysis
  • Strengthen the flow of health information: systematic information sharing at all levels of the health pyramid

What we do in the field

Strategic consulting for health information systems

  • Evaluate the HIS performance of health programmes
  • Determine health information needs: support the adaptation of data reporting frameworks and the development of monitoring and evaluation plans; support programme managers and front-line practitioners in identifying their needs
  • Support the integration of a specific HIS into each country's national health information system

Supporting implementation of health information systems

Implementing routine data collection systems

  • Develop data collection and analysis tools adapted to each country
  • Ensure that routinely used tools (medical charts, hospital records, monthly reports, IT tools) are consistent with the data that are to be reported
  • Train and mentor staff in charge of collecting, controlling, validating, storing, sharing and analysing health information
  • Support intermediate levels of the health pyramid in integrating data management and monitoring into routine work

Implementing specific data collection: support the development of study protocols and implementation of related databases and research projects (data collection and analysis)

Supporting systematic sharing and information analysis

  • Consolidate the data collection and distribution system
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of health programmes: indicator production, impact assessment, strategic information analysis
