Togo
Civil society organizations (CSOs) working on health issues, including the fight against HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis, or the strengthening of health systems, represent a crucial pillar for human development and the achievement of health-related sustainable development goals. These organizations are often on the front lines, working directly with communities after identifying local health needs to propose tailored solutions. Strengthening CSOs is therefore essential to improving key health indicators and strengthening the health system more generally, particularly in terms of awareness and education, access to quality healthcare, health policy monitoring and advocacy, and disease surveillance. This position is in line with the fight against HIV in Togo, which has made significant progress in recent years, even though major challenges remain, particularly with regard to pediatric HIV. Children, adolescents, and young people therefore remain a priority target in the fight against HIV in Togo, with diversity in terms of age and behavior representing a considerable challenge. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV also continues to be a significant source of new infections, accounting for approximately 14.48% of cases according to Spectrum 2023. In addition, due to sociocultural factors such as early marriage and gender inequality, young women aged 15 to 24 are particularly vulnerable, with 431 new infections recorded in 2023, compared to 112 among boys in the same age group. To address these challenges and achieve UNAIDS’ 95-95-95 target, adolescents and young people mobilized and created the REAJIR + association in March 2024. Through this association, members are engaged in peer education, leadership, and activism, implementing various projects to address the health and well-being needs of their peers. As a young organization, the association needs technical support to carry out a situational analysis and needs assessment in order to improve governance and better respond to the issues facing children, adolescents, and young people living with HIV.
