How can HIV self-testing be made a routine practice accessible to everyone in Côte d’Ivoire? This is the goal of the TPE ADVIH project, whose results were presented by Solthis during a closing workshop held in Abidjan, attended by national partners.
Implemented since October 2023 with support from the Innovation Fund for Development, the project supported the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene, and Universal Health Coverage, through the National AIDS Control Program, to integrate and roll out HIV self-testing (ADVIH) on a large scale. It builds on the ATLAS project, which had introduced this innovation in the country.
Given limited resources for universal free access, the PNLS promoted an approach based on public-private partnerships, involving suppliers, distributors, the National Order of Pharmacists, private pharmacies, and several ministries.
This initiative has made it possible to:
– facilitate the registration and availability of self-tests on the Ivorian market;
– strengthen the capacities of pharmacists and institutional stakeholders;
– promote self-testing among the general public.
To date, two suppliers offer oral and blood self-tests that are now registered and available at affordable prices in the private sector. Their rollout is continuing in pharmacies and certain public facilities.
This initiative highlights the key role of national authorities and public-private partnerships in expanding access to testing and strengthening HIV response strategies in Côte d’Ivoire.
