Solthis Donates Essential Medical Supplies and Equipment to Kingharman Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Freetown, Sierra Leone.
In a continuous effort to strengthen healthcare service delivery and reduce maternal and infant mortality, international health NGO Solthis (Solidarité Thérapeutique et Médicale pour l’Afrique) has formally handed over a donation of critical medical equipment, sterilization technology, and buffer supplies to Kingharman Maternal and Child Health Hospital.
The donation targeted critical infrastructure and supply gaps in the hospital’s labor and delivery ward following a comprehensive assessment, transitioning the facility toward more humanized, safe, and efficient obstetric care.
Key Handover Highlights & Direct Impact
Sterilization & Infection Prevention: Solthis provided a high-capacity, modern autoclave capable of sterilizing 10 to 15 delivery packs simultaneously, reducing delays that arise from waiting for delivery sets or instruments to be sterilized or preventing infections resulting from the use of non-sterile instruments or cotton for swabbing.
Maternal & Fetal Monitoring: Delivery of updated digital fetal Dopplers to replace older, unreliable units, ensuring clear fetal heart rate monitoring during labor.
Modern Delivery Equipment: Handover of two modern delivery beds and a precision digital infant weighing scale to replace outdated units.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) & Buffer Stock: Supply of protective fluid-resistant aprons for midwives to prevent occupational exposure, alongside buffer stocks of essential consumables (including sterile gauze and medical releases) to prevent stockouts between Ministry of Health supply cycles.
Humanized Childbirth Initiative: Provision of birth balloons (5) and yoga mats (6) to establish a non-medicalized, humanized childbirth space. This initiative encourages active labor positions rather than confining mothers to standard hospital beds. The hospital management and Solthis clinical teams are already collaborating on setting up the specialized humanized delivery area which should soon be available as an option for pregnant women to use during labor and delivery
In his remarks, the Medical Superintendent acknowledged and appreciated Solthis for being a consistently supportive partner to Kingharman Hospital over the past months and years, particularly through capacity building, staff training, and targeted support for our labor ward. He stated that, “following their assessment of our facility, they have stepped in directly to help address critical gaps in care”. He made specific emphasis on the timeliness of this donation, explaining that it coincides with the period the MOH is ramping up efforts through the 300 days of activism against preventable maternal deaths, preventable child deaths, and zero dose vaccinated children. He committed to ensuring that the items will be used judiciously of these supplies and equipment
The Solthis representative responded by stating that “our goal is to ensure that midwives do not have to compromise on safety or waste crucial time looking for supplies during delivery. Beyond immediate equipment, these consumables serve as a buffer stock to ensure care is never interrupted. Furthermore, the introduction of birth balloons and mats support our shared vision for humanized, patient-centered childbirth.” She furthered that while the primary contingent of equipment has been integrated into the facility, additional items—including dedicated neonatal suction units and infant cradles—were currently undergoing final procurement and technical verification before delivery. As the team committed to continue working with the hospital and MOH to achieve the shared vision of significantly improving maternal and child health outcomes, they also urged the hospital management to ensure judicious use of the donated items.
